Celebrating Wesak Poya Day in Sri Lanka

by Pawan Yasara

Wesak Poya Day is one of the most important Buddhist holidays in Sri Lanka. It commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The holiday falls on the full moon day of May, which is also known as Vesak or Visakha Puja in other Buddhist countries.

On this day, Buddhists in Sri Lanka and around the world engage in various religious activities, such as visiting temples, offering flowers and incense, and listening to sermons. Many also engage in acts of charity and kindness, such as donating food to the poor and performing acts of service.

One of the most striking features of Wesak Poya Day in Sri Lanka is the colorful lanterns and decorations that adorn homes, streets, and temples. These lanterns are often made from paper or bamboo and decorated with intricate designs and patterns. They are lit up at night, creating a beautiful and festive atmosphere throughout the country.

Another popular tradition during Wesak Poya Day is the making of pandols, which are large, elaborate structures that depict scenes from the life of the Buddha. These pandols are often several stories high and are made from bamboo, wood, and other materials. They are decorated with colorful lights, flowers, and other ornaments, and are a sight to behold for both locals and visitors alike.

In addition to these traditions, many Buddhists also observe the Eight Precepts on Wesak Poya Day. These precepts include abstaining from killing, stealing, lying, sexual misconduct, and intoxicants, as well as refraining from eating after noon and using luxurious beds and seats.

Overall, Wesak Poya Day is a time for Buddhists in Sri Lanka and around the world to reflect on the teachings of the Buddha and to strive to live a life of compassion, wisdom, and selflessness. It is a time to celebrate the birth, enlightenment, and death of one of the greatest spiritual leaders in history, and to renew one’s commitment to the path of peace and enlightenment.
