A viral video showing a group of dogs walking together along a roadside in Jilin province, China, captured millions of views worldwide. The clip featured a golden retriever, a corgi, a German shepherd, and several other dogs moving as if they were on a mission.
Very quickly, social media created its own story. People claimed the dogs had been stolen for the dog meat trade, escaped, and were now on a long journey back home. Details kept growing — like an injured German shepherd being protected, or a corgi leading the group.
But none of that was true.
The original video, filmed on March 15, was real — but the story around it was not. News investigations later confirmed there was no evidence of theft or escape. The person who filmed the video had only guessed what might have happened and later admitted they didn’t actually see any escape.
Reporters tracked down the dogs and found that they all belonged to villagers living just a few kilometers away. The dogs were simply roaming around, which is normal in that area.
There was also a simple explanation: the German shepherd was in heat, which attracted the other dogs. According to local reports, dogs in that village often wander off for a day or two during this time.
By March 19 — just four days later — all the dogs had safely returned home.
What went viral wasn’t the truth, but a powerful story people wanted to believe.
